This is my 1883 Singer Improved Family sewing machine with Forget-Me-Not decals. I purchased this machine in April of 2023. I found this machine south of Columbus OH. The machine is overall in good shape although a good portion of the bed decals have been worn off. The stitch length adjustment knob was also broken off by a previous owner and will need to be replaced.
When the Improved Family machine was introduced by Singer in 1879, it's my understanding they had quality issues. Due to this they stopped making the IF until 1883. So, if you're looking for a IF from 1880 to 1882, you shouldn't find one. If you do, let me know!!
Improved Family machines from 1879 and 1883 can be distinguished by a few features that were changed in 1884:
- There were finials on the top of the needle and presser foot bars
- The presser foot tension adjustment knob is located mid way up the arm of the machine
1883 was also a transitional year for the Improved Family machine. There are a few features that changed during the production year of 1883:
- The serial number boss was moved from the front of the machine to the back of the machine
- The machine hinges transitioned from a flat style hinge to a post style hinge.
Also, in both 1879 and 1883, some machines were made without belt guard and some were made with a full belt guard (like the New Family - Model 12). If the machine had no belt guard the bobbin winder was mounted to the pillar of the machine. If the machine had a full belt guard the bobbin winder was mounted to the belt guard. I have an 1879 IF also and both my 1879 and 1883 IF's have a full belt guard with the bobbin winder mounted on the belt guard.
I haven't done anything with this machine other than wipe it down with sewing machine oil to remove the excess dirt. Below are pictures that were taken when I unloaded the machine from the car. Sty tuned for future updates on the preservation of this machine/cabinet!
