1894 Singer 27 with Dogwood Decals

     1894 Singer 27 - Dogwood Decals

Ever since I saw the dogwood decals it's been on the top of my "gotta have" list.  I've searched endlessly and I've seen many for sale.... but the decals were never in good enough shape and I wasn't willing to settle.  Finally, in March of this year I finally spotted a beautiful Singer 27 with dogwood decals.  But, of course, it's over 5 hours away NJ!  Also, the asking price was way more than I've ever paid for any sewing machine.  After studying the ad and drooling on my laptop for a few hours I decided it was so nice I couldn't resist and had to inquire on it.  After FB messaging and eventually calling the owner we agreed on a reasonable price and they were nice enough to meet me in Denver PA cutting my 5+ hour drive to now under 4 hours! (how cool was that).  When we met in Denver for the exchange I found out that the machine was the owner's grandmother's machine and it hadn't been used in a loooooong time.  The owner was sad to see the machine go but I assured her that it would be well taken care of and I guaranteed that the machine would sew again.  I promised her that I would send her a video of it sewing when I got it up and running again.  After the almost 4 hour drive home I was so excited I immediately had to set it up to see if it would sew.  After a quick oiling and new belt it was sewing a beautiful stitch!  As promised, I sent her a video about an hour after I got home.  She was so happy that she cried.

The machine is an 1894 Singer 27.  It is in incredible condition for it's age.  I've searched the internet over the years and have yet to find a better example.  It's just amazing to me that this machine is 127 years old!  It's an early 27 so there are some things that are different than most of the 27's that people are used to seeing.  For example...1) The handwheel is thicker(like a VS2) than later 27's.  2) It has a kidney shaped rear inspection cover (like a VS2) instead of the round inspection plate like later 27's.  3)  The machine hinge pin holes don't have set screws.

The cabinet has been refinished but whoever refinished it did a really nice job.  I haven't done anything to the machine but put a new belt on it, oiled it and wiped the machine down with sewing machine oil.

From here I'll let the pictures do the talking.  There are a lot of pictures but this machine deserves many detailed pictures.

     Enjoy!

  1. Also, the slide plates have (or supposed to have) the VS2 patent dates that end in 1887.
27s (with the round inspection plate etc.) have patent dates that end in1891 (sometimes 1890). The 27 came out in 1891. Yet early “27s” have the VS2 patent dates that end in 1887 (along with other similarities to the VS2).
