Earlier this week, I acquired a Florence sewing machine housed in a fancy leg, half case table. I have sought this specific model for years—ever since viewing one in a peer's collection—and have been patiently waiting for an example in excellent condition that fit my budget. To finalize the acquisition, which included two other vintage machines, I completed a 14-hour round-trip journey to Michigan to meet with a fellow collector.
This particular machine carries serial number 75,056 which dates it to 1868. As a "side feed" model, the fabric advances from left to right from the operator's perspective, distinguishing it from Florence’s "back feed" variants, which move fabric away from the user. The machine is remarkably well-preserved, featuring original hand-painted decoration and silver-plated arms. It also came with its original shuttle, and three bobbins. While it requires standard cleaning and a few replacement parts for the bobbin winder—specifically a thumb adjustment screw, spring, and tire—it is a thrilling addition to my collection. I have already fitted a temporary tire from my own inventory, as shown in the initial photographs below. I look forward to sharing further updates as the preservation and cleaning process progresses. Enjoy!
